I am a huge fan of upcycling! There are huge benefits to it. Most importantly, it reduces the amount of rejected stuff & waste to the landfills. It also reduces the need for new production material, which in turn decreases air and water pollution. It helps in sustaining natural reserves too.
There are so many brands out there now, who are making such amazing stuff with old & leftover materials. This material would have ended up in landfills if they had not created such wonderful ideas out of it. Vases from wine bottles, jewellery from old nylon ropes…and many such great ideas are coming up everyday by these wonderful designers.
A planet that is already choking with an ever-increasing human population does not need another scary load of trash & waste material mountains. That’s why I believe, that Upcycling should be the call of the hour.
Did you know that it takes 2,700 liters of water to produce the cotton needed to make a single t-shirt? Upcycling simply put is reuse of existing materials. Thus raw material demand is reduced.
With rapidly decreasing forest cover and clean water resources, we can’t ignore the fact that we need to take a good hard look at our consumption habits.
Upcycled products demand a certain level of expert skills by its makers. Every handmade upcycled product is created with perfection in mind, and uses up crafts & folk art skills that are getting left behind in our fast paced, mass-producing world.
So, in a crowd of look-alikes & identical boring product lines, a unique handmade upcycled product is so uplifting! They are the proof of its maker’s workmanship & creativity.
Upcycling has created resources for earnings in many low-income groups & rural areas in India and other countries. People in these groups, especially with their traditional crafts skills, have found ways to earn an income by creating upcycled products that are sold in the global marketplace.
This has created entrepreneurial opportunities for them. By reusing existing raw material, upcycling can also help designers by decreasing their making costs tremendously.
“Being Green” should become the trendiest trend out there! ASAP!! The rewards for maintaining a sustainable lifestyle are mostly personal, but trust me, you would feel so much better inside if you did something for the greater good.
Look at the bigger picture here!
If everyone took a shot at upcycling, reusing and reducing consumption, we will all benefit as a result. Composting, refusing single use plastics, and reusing what you have at hand are just some of the things I can recommend for everyone to start doing. These might look small, but collectively they can have a much bigger impact on our planet.
A stitch in time saves nine (and some monies too!) reusing and repairing can help you save some of your hard earned money and keep it for more important things like travelling the world.
So make that sewing kit & Hardware Tool Kit your best friend and carry on reusing.
Upcycling and slow fashion make sure that whatever you do purchase is going to be a unique, one of a kind piece. There will be a lovely story behind it, a story that comes from the maker’s heart itself.
It would make for the perfect gift too, right?
