Art of Reuse Contest by HIDESIGN

Art of Reuse

“Did you know that it requires more than 400 gallons of water to make one organic cotton T-shirt? Upcycle.”

Let me get you familiar with the green lingo, UPcycling is a sexier, even greener version of Recycling. When we recycle something, we break it down into something of lesser value, a process that consumes energy.

Whereas, UPcycling is a value addition process where we “reinvent” that object and turn it into something of higher quality. It’s the ultimate in reuse!! Although UPcycling can prove to be a great business opportunity for some people, I’d rather brag about the trees I ‘save’ by using rejected/discarded wood.

UPcycling is all about how to deal with “excess”. UPcycling is steering a completely new wave of entrepreneurial innovation. Its popularity is particularly clear online like Etsy and Facebook, which offer an abundance of upcycled goods. For artists, the materials for upcycling can cost next to nothing.

Even luxury-goods firms like Hermès are in on the act, repurposing leftover scraps from their signature scarves and Birkin bags for a home furnishings and accessories line dubbed “petit h.”

NOW, back to my bit…

So HIDESIGN launched this contest, called The Art of Reuse on facebook a few days ago. What more could I ask for! Another opportunity for me to get creative :p

I went through many ideas, then finally stopped on one. The chosen one then went through many iterations on the sketchbook. The sketch then went through changes according to the availability of the material at hand. Eventually (phew!) I was able to come up with this wall clock.

Made up partially with the leather scraps given in the “Reuse Kit” and a metal ring which I recovered from an old broken lampshade frame.   I’m happy with my design…do you like it? Do leave a comment.
